U.S. Secret Service Coordinates Security for Papal Visit

April 17, 2008 - The U.S. Secret Service is coordinating the federal government’s security for Pope Benedict XVI during his six-day visit to Washington, D.C. and New York City.

Twenty-seven federal, state and local law enforcement and public safety agencies are involved in security for the pope’s visit to Washington. Other Department components involved include the U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Federal Protective Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Transportation Security Administration and the Office of Intelligence and Analysis. Secretary Testifies on FY 09 Budget Request

April 11, 2008 – Secretary Chertoff discussed the Department’s $50.5 billion FY 2009 budget request before the House Subcommittee on Homeland Security Appropriations. He outlined the Department’s progress in achieving effective control of the border, screening passengers, protecting critical infrastructure, responding to emergencies, and enforcing our immigration laws. The Secretary emphasized continued funding for these efforts, as well as on border fencing, biometrics, increased hiring, technology modernization, cargo screening, and cyber security. Read More

Global Entry Pilot for International Travelers

April 11, 2008 - U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the Global Entry (TM) pilot program, scheduled to launch this summer. Global Entry allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers expedited clearance upon arrival into the United States.

Global Entry will be available for U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who are frequent international travelers, provided they have not been found guilty of a criminal offense, charged with a customs or immigration offense, or declared inadmissible to the U.S. under immigration legislation.
